COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
1. Can we use a built-up deck using T&G 1x6s lapped 50%?
Answer:
Yes

Question:
After typing the 500 word abstract, I am not able to move forward to next page. I only get an error message. How do I complete this part of the entry successfully and move on?
Answer:
Due to a programming glitch, the 500 word narratives cannot contain an apostrophe. This includes as a contraction, possessive, or as a symbol for feet, etc. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Question:
An earlier Q/A response indicates that plywood is not allowed for the bridge deck. What if the plywood is protected by an acceptable treatment to address the "wear and weather" issue?
Answer:
If you address the issue of plywood®s problem with not being able to tolerate repetitive loading and surface wear without delaminating by the application of a protective surface, you will not be disqualified, but I cannot answer how the judges will respond to the solution you propose. Depends on the job you do in "selling" your solution, such as how durable is your solution and how wear-resistant it is; would it be practical and economical in real-life application (for an actual road bridge)? You may get extra points for innovation and you may get negative points for use of plywood. It®s hard to predict!

Question:
Are "pre-fabricated" built-up members allowed to exceed 3 meters?
Answer:
No members are allowed to exceed 3 meters; that includes individual pieces used in constructing a composite member and any prefab purchased/donated member. In other words, you cannot purchase an I-beam, glulam member, etc. to span the full bridge span!

Question:
Are the support plates allowed to provide any lateral support?
Answer:
No. Also, the supports cannot be fixed to the bridge, nor in any way can the supports contribute to the strength of the bridge. For example, as in an arch design, the supports cannot prevent the bridge from flattening out under load.

Question:
Can plywood be used in any other part of the bridge except for the deck surface?
Answer:
Plywood can be used in other parts of the bridge as long as it is treated as required. Just be sure its use is practical, or points may be lost in judging.

Question:
Can we send our drawings in as an AutoCAD file?
Answer:
NO! AutoCAD formats will not display for online judging and results. You may submit drawings as email to attachments to bhsouthwest@msrcd.org . Please send them in as .jpg, .gif or .bmp files . Your AutoCAD software may allow you to use the "save as" function to create the files. Optionally, you can scan a hard copy of the drawings, and use the "save as" function in the scanner program to create the files.

Question:
Can we use 6" strips of 3/4" plywood as decking? (a plywood 1x6)
Answer:
No

Question:
Does the curb have to resist a 5 kN load?
Answer:
No, the curb does not have to resist a 5 kN load. The curb, however, must sit on the deck and be a part of and/or attached to the deck.

Question:
Does the weight of wood glue count as % non-wood?
Answer:
